Do-It-Yourself Home Gym

Posted by Natural 8:42 PM, under | No comments

You don't need a home gym to exercise at home. Here are four inexpensive, easy-to-store alternatives that, together, enhance all the elements of fitness: muscle strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance. All are sold in sporting-goods stores.

Getting on the bandwagon

Elastic exercise bands are a perfect option for beginning strength training. They've been used by physical therapists for years. Cheap (usually about $3 a band), portable, and versatile, these long, wide bands provide the resistance you need to work your muscles. They often come with illustrated booklets. The bands' colors reflect the level of resistance. You can strengthen and tone virtually all your major muscles—and work them from a variety of angles, depending on what you use as an anchor for the elastic band.

Rowing. Sitting on the floor with your legs extended, loop band under arches of feet and hold one end in each hand. Start with arms extended forward. Keeping your back straight and shoulders down, pull your elbows back slowly, contracting shoulder blades. Hold for 2 seconds; release slowly. Repeat.
Tips: Start with easy resistance and gradually increase the difficulty. If you're stretching the band too much, switch to a harder resistance. Keep the band at its normal width so that it doesn't cut into your hands, feet, or ankles. After stretching the band, release it slowly, but do not let it go slack. Wrap the band securely around your hand or foot so it won't slip. When an exercise calls for anchoring one end of the band, choose an object that won't move, such as a pole or heavy piece of furniture.

Having a BIG ball

The big vinyl therapy ball—also called a physio-, Swiss, or gym ball—has been used for 30 years in Switzerland. Now these balls are turning up in gyms and physical-therapy offices across the U.S. Filled with air and relatively soft, unlike medicine balls, they cushion you as you stretch. They come in different sizes, for people of different heights. For instance, a 65-centimeter (about 24-inch) ball is recommended for those between 5'8" and 6'. Inflated with a simple pump, they start at about $20.
You can do calisthenics (strengtheners) and stretches on the ball, as well as warm-up and cool-down routines. Ball workouts require the use of multiple muscle groups. For instance, by simply sitting and bouncing on the ball, you work your hamstrings, quadriceps, abdominals, and back muscles. Add arm movements, and you also get an upper-body workout. The main benefits are improved coordination, balance, and posture.

Stretch for hip flexor muscles. Kneeling, put your stomach on the ball. Keeping one knee forward and bent at a 90° angle, put forearms on the ball. Extend the other leg backward, with the knee on the floor. Hold and feel the stretch in the front of your hip. Your front knee should be over the foot. Then lift the back knee, straighten the back leg, and stretch again. Switch legs.
Tips: When you sit on the ball, as you would a chair, your thighs should be parallel to the ground. Don't wear pins or anything that might puncture the ball. Make sure you have enough room so that if you lose your balance you won't fall onto a piece of furniture. If you are older and/or have poor balance, start off with a "spotter"—someone who will stand alongside you and make sure you don't fall off the ball.

Taking your medicine ball

For a different kind of ball workout, try medicine balls. Leather versions used to be popular among trainers and athletes in the 1930s. Today these weighted balls, dubbed "plyoballs" or "body balls," are usually made of polyurethane and/or vinyl.

What you do with a medicine ball is called plyometric exercise. This involves stretching a muscle (as when you squat before you jump to shoot a basket) and then contracting it suddenly or "explosively" as you jump. You can hold the ball above your chest to make your sit-up routine more strenuous. Or substitute it for hand weights while doing aerobic dance. Or play toss or keep-away with one or two partners. Plyometrics can build muscle strength, thus increasing power for specific sports.

Twist. Sitting with your back at a 45° angle to the floor, move the ball from side to side, twisting your upper body.
Tips: Start with a small, lightweight ball—about 18 inches in diameter and weighing 5 to 9 pounds. Balls over 16 pounds should be used only in professional training. Vary your workout to avoid overuse injuries or soreness. For advanced or intense plyometric exercises, consult a trainer.

Learning the ropes

Jumping rope is great exercise for adults as well as kids. All you need is a rope and good shoes—plus a little instruction at first and then some practice.
As aerobic exercise became a byword in the 1980s, rope jumping gained new popularity—for good reason. As a way to build cardiovascular endurance, jumping rope can be as strenuous as jogging, but is lower in impact, since you should jump only a little off the ground. It helps improve coordination, speed, and agility. If you engage in a sport (such as tennis, basketball, or skiing) that requires bursts of speed and power, jumping rope can be particularly beneficial. It works muscles in the legs, shoulders, chest, and forearms. And it burns lots of calories.

Check the rope length. Stand on the center and pull the handles up your sides: the ends of the handles should come just up to your armpits.
Tips: Wear shoes with good support; aerobics shoes or cross-trainers (not running shoes) are best. Make sure the rope handles fit comfortably in your hands. It's best to jump on the kind of springy wood floor found at a gym or health club, but a lawn or a mat works well, too. Carpets are fine, but a thick one may throw off your timing. Concrete is too hard and increases the risk of injury, but if your shoes are good enough you should be able to jump anywhere.

If you are just beginning to jump, start at about 70 turns a minute, which allows you to double-hop each jump. Keeping your elbows near the sides of your hips, turn the rope with your wrists and forearms—don't turn from the shoulders. To minimize stress on your legs, jump just high enough for the rope to pass under your feet—only an inch or two off the ground. Land softly on the balls of your feet and let your heels help absorb the impact. Land with your knees slightly bent. Keep your posture erect, shoulders back, and abdomen tucked in. Slow down if you get winded or too tired. Jumping rope can elevate your heart rate very quickly.

Brain Panic Situation Better Able Given

Natural (The Brain)
Jakarta, students and college students often panic when faced with an exam, especially if you have not had time to learn. Rather than surrender, the final seconds could be used to read, because in a state of panic read brains are better able to remember it well.

Panic during an exam situation may trigger the release of stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline. Both these hormones are able to change the mechanism of action diyakni hippocampus, part of the brain that regulate memory and ability to learn something.

Changes in the mechanism of epigenetic modification called it creates its chain Deoxyribo Nuceic Acid (DNA) in the hippocampus as re-programmed. If is often difficult to remember or understand something, then everything can seem easier when you're panicking.

"We often experience, bitter memories in tough times sometimes more lasting than great memories," said Professor Hans Reul, neurologists from the University of Bristol, as quoted from the Telegraph, on Monday (02/05/2011).

In a study in the journal Experimental Neurology, Professor Reul said the stress factors experienced by a person causes the bad memories more memorable. The same mechanism also occurs during a panic, for example, when studying all night before the exam.
Natural (The Brain)
Not all school and university students can be successful by learning the all sudden, but Prof. Reul said the result could be more effective if someone is able to manage stress. That is, the person must stay focused despite being panicky.

In addition, the mechanism of epigenetic modification appears only once in a while and will not be effective if every moment always panic. The more often deal with stress, the brain will adapt so that over time the ability to remember will not be affected again.

Interactive Map Illustrates the Spread of Diabetes Over Last Decade

Posted by Natural 11:20 PM, under | No comments

Natural (Interactive Map Illustrates)

You might not realize it, but maps play a crucial role in studying disease. One of the earliest and best examples was a map of cholera outbreaks and deaths in 1854 in London. As chronicled in "The Ghost Map" by Steven Johnson, the work of Dr. John Snow in plotting the outbreaks helped discover -- and eliminate -- the source of the deadly disease.

Diabetes can be mapped, too. Starting with 2004, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has mapped the prevalence of diabetes on a county-by-county basis. The map also tracks obesity, acknowledging the correlation of being considerably overweight and developing diabetes.

In addition to tracking the prevalence of diabetes, the maps also track related health issues such as eye ailments and renal disease, how many people report performing crucial care tasks such as monitoring blood glucose, checking for foot injuries and regularly seeing a physician, and risk factors for complications such as smoking, physical inactivity and hypertension.
Natural (Interactive Map Illustrates)
Maps like these can help health care and public health officials track and spot trends. Mapping diseases or conditions that contribute to them also help determine where additional attention is needed to address high rates of a condition.

The 1854 cholera outbreak in London killed more than 600 people in a few short weeks. According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in the US in 2006, forming the underlying cause for some 72,507 deaths. Tools like the CDC's Diabetes/Obesity map may help researchers find ways to reduce that toll.

Alcohol and Diabetes: Tips and Concerns

Posted by Natural 11:14 PM, under | No comments

Natural (Alcohol and Diabetes)

If you have diabetes, should you drink alcohol? That question has long been debated, with "it depends" being the answer for most people.

According to the American Diabetes Association, "Beyond all the health and safety concerns about alcohol, if you have diabetes and are on diabetes medications that lower blood glucose, you need to practice caution."

Alcohol is processed by the body in a similar way to fat; one drink equals 2 fat exchanges while regular beer equals 1 starch exchange, according to dlife.com. Alcohol is also loaded with calories - a 5-oz. glass of wine has at least 100 calories. Drinking temporarily reduces the ability of your liver to release glucose while it labors to clear the alcohol from your blood. This is why drinking can lead to hypoglycemia - low blood sugar - right after drinking and for as much as 8-12 hours afterward.

Alcohol also seems to be associated with vision problems for those with diabetes, according to a limited study reported in Diabetic Medicine. "People with type 2 diabetes who drink alcohol are at increased risk for blurry vision unrelated to retinopathy, researchers said. Moderate drinking did not increase the risk for or progression of retinopathy in a study of more than 1,200 diabetics, but it nearly doubled the risk of losing two eye-chart lines of visual acuity over an average of five years."
Natural (Alcohol and Diabetes)
According to a recently reported study from Australia, total abstinence may be a good thing. As reported by endorineweb.com. the Australian National Drug Household survey showed that people diagnosed with diabetes are much more likely to swear off alcohol and "these participants reported tremendous improvement in their perceived overall well-being after abstaining from alcohol."

If you choose to drink, discuss your decision with your physician. If you have trouble controlling your blood glucose or have other health issues such as high blood pressure or obesity, your physician may recommend cutting out alcohol altogether.

The ADA recommends a maximum two drinks per day for men and one for women, consumed along with food. For those 65 and older, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism recommends no more than one alcoholic drink per day. Note that these are the same recommendations as for people without diabetes.

Other tips from ADA:
* 1 alcoholic drink equals a 12 oz beer, 5 oz glass of wine, or 1 oz distilled spirits (vodka, whiskey, gin, etc.).

* If you drink alcohol at least several times a week, make sure your doctor knows this before he/she prescribes a diabetes pill.

* Drink only when and if blood glucose is under control. Do not omit food from your regular meal plan.

* Test blood glucose to help you decide if you should drink.

* Wear an I.D. that notes you have diabetes.

* Sip a drink slowly to make it last.

* Have a no calorie beverage by your side to quench your thirst.

* Try wine spritzers to decrease the amount of wine in the drink.

* Use calorie-free drink mixers -- diet soda, club soda, diet tonic water, or water.

* Drink alcohol with a snack or meal. Some good snack ideas are pretzels, popcorn, crackers, fat-free or baked chips, raw vegetables and a low-fat yogurt dip.

* Find a registered dietitian to help you fit alcohol into your food plan.

* Do not drive or plan to drive for several hours after you drink alcohol.

Kitchen Staples for Your Diabetes Diet

Posted by Natural 11:09 PM, under | No comments

Natural (Kitchen)
“What can I eat?” That’s one of the most frequently asked questions of newly diagnosed diabetes patients. It’s true, that a diabetes diagnosis likely will require a diet overhaul, but that doesn’t mean your meals need to be bland and boring In this month’s issue of Diabetes Forecast, the magazine of the American Diabetes Association, there’s a helpful feature for both newly diagnosed patients and long-time diabetics who are looking for some culinary inspiration.

Stock your pantry (and fridge and spice rack) with these diabetes-friendly foods and you’ll see that following a diabetic diet can be both healthy and delicious. Their list is divided into Brilliant Basics, Cold Comforts and Flavor Savers. Here are some of our favorites and the reasons why they’re such great choices for a diabetes diet:

Canned beans: High in fiber and protein, most varieties of canned beans are a great choice for diabetics. They’re an even better choice because of their versatility--eat them as a main dish or add them to soups and salads, there’s so many things you can do with beans. Check the nutrition label for sodium content, which sometimes can be high. Rise and drain the beans before using them to remove some of the added salt.
Natural (Kitchen)
Reduced-sodium broth: Whether you choose chicken or vegetable, broth is a great way to add flavor to soups and whole grains without too much salt. Diabetes Forecast adds, “Once opened, broth can be stored, sealed, in the refrigerator for about 1 to 2 weeks.”

Tomatoes: Fresh are best (and tomato season is just around the corner), but no-salt-added canned ones work well, too, for homemade tomato sauce, chili, soups, stews and other recipes.

Frozen vegetables: Again, fresh is best, but frozen vegetables offer a low-cost way to try a variety of good-for-you veggies.

Extra-virgin olive oil: If you’ve never tried extra virgin olive oil (many people call it EVOO), give it a try. It’s a heart-healthy fat and a true flavor booster. Few scents are as captivating as onions and garlic sauteed in a little bit of EVOO.

What is a "free food" Diabetes?

Posted by Natural 9:33 PM, under | No comments

"Free foods" are foods that can be eaten freely without affecting diabetes control or weight, those with less than 20 calories and 5 grams carbohydrate per serving. Examples include diet soft drinks, sugar-free gelatin dessert, sugar-free ice pops, sugarless gum and sugar-free syrup.

Sugar-free does not mean carbohydrate-free. Compare the total carbohydrate content of a sugar-free food with that of the standard product. If there is a big difference in carbohydrate content between the two foods, you may want to buy the sugar-free food. If there is little difference in the total grams of carbohydrate between the two foods, choose the one you want based on price and taste. Make sure to read the label carefully to make the best choice.

"No sugar added" foods do not have any form of sugar added during processing or packaging, and do not contain high-sugar ingredients. But remember, they may still be high in carbohydrate, so you have to check the label. Fat-free foods can be higher in carbohydrates and contain almost the same calories as the foods they replace. Fat-free cookies are a good example. Fat-free foods are not necessarily a better choice than the standard product, so read your labels carefully.

Diabetes Tips

Posted by Natural 8:37 PM, under | No comments

Natural (Diabetes)

Did you know that nearly 9 out of 10 people with newly-diagnosed type 2 diabetes are overweight? If you are overweight, losing some weight could help you better manage your diabetes. Losing weight and keeping it off is a real challenge for most people. That's why it's important to begin a weight loss program with the help of your health care team, including, if possible, a dietitian.

You are most likely to succeed in your weight loss goals if you develop a plan and set realistic goals. Your weight loss goals need to be specific and attainable. This means that they outline exactly what you intend to do and that they are within your reach. For example, a goal of "walk more" is a good idea, but it is not specific. A goal of "run ten miles a day" is specific, but may not be attainable. A goal of "walk 30 minutes a day, five days a week" is not only specific, but it is also attainable.
Natural (Diabetes)
Rewarding yourself for sticking to your weight loss program is a good way to keep yourself motivated. Rewards need to be meaningful and realistic. Focus on giving yourself a reward for each step along the way. For example, reward yourself after sticking to the first week on your diet and exercise regimen. You might buy a new music CD or go to the movies. Bigger rewards, such as tickets to a concert or treating yourself to a vacation or a weekend trip, can be saved for reaching long-term goals.
People with diabetes can't eat sweets or chocolate.

If eaten as part of a healthy meal plan, or combined with exercise, sweets and desserts can be eaten by people with diabetes. They are no more "off limits" to people with diabetes, than they are to people without diabetes.
Eating too much sugar causes diabetes.

No. Diabetes is caused by a combination of genetic and lifestyle factors. However, being overweight does increase your risk for developing type 2 diabetes. If you have a history of diabetes in your family, eating a healthy meal plan and regular exercise are recommended to manage your weight.
People with diabetes should eat special diabetic foods.

A healthy meal plan for people with diabetes is the same as that for everyone - low in fat (especially saturated and trans fat), moderate in salt and sugar, with meals based on whole grain foods, vegetables and fruit. Diabetic and "dietetic" versions of sugar-containing foods offer no special benefit. They still raise blood glucose levels, are usually more expensive and can also have a laxative effect if they contain sugar alcohols.
You should only eat small amounts of starchy foods, such as bread, potatoes and pasta.
Starchy foods are part of a healthy meal plan. What is important is the portion size. Whole grain breads, cereals, pasta, rice and starchy vegetables like potatoes, yams, peas and corn can be included in your meals and snacks. The key is portions. For most people with diabetes, having 3-4 servings of carbohydrate-containing foods is about right. Whole grain starchy foods are also a good source of fiber, which helps keep your gut healthy.
People with diabetes are more likely to get colds and other illnesses.
Natural (Diabetes)
No. You are no more likely to get a cold or another illness if you have diabetes. However, people with diabetes are advised to get flu shots. This is because any infection interferes with your blood glucose management, putting you at risk of high blood glucose levels and, for those with type 1 diabetes, an increased risk of ketoacidosis.
Insulin causes atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and high blood pressure.

No, insulin does not cause atherosclerosis. In the laboratory, there is evidence that insulin can initiate some of the early processes associated with atherosclerosis. Therefore, some physicians were fearful that insulin might aggravate the development of high blood pressure and hardening of the arteries. But it doesn't.
Insulin causes weight gain, and because obesity is bad for you, insulin should not be taken.

Both the UKPDS (United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study) and the DCCT (Diabetes Control & Complications Trial) have shown that the benefit of glucose management with insulin far outweighs (no pun intended) the risk of weight gain.
Fruit is a healthy food. Therefore, it is ok to eat as much of it as you wish.

Fruit is a healthy food. It contains fiber and lots of vitamins and minerals. Because fruit contains carbohydrate, it needs to be included in your meal plan. Talk to your dietitian about the amount, frequency and types of fruits you should eat.
You don't need to change your diabetes regimen unless your A1C is greater than 8%

The better your glucose control, the less likely you are to develop complications of diabetes. An A1C in the sevens (7s), however, does not represent good control. The ADA goal is less than 7 percent. The closer your A1C is to the normal range (less than 6 percent), the lower your chances of complications. However, you increase your risk of hypoglycemia, especially if you have type 1 diabetes. Talk with your health care provider about the best goal for you.
